Coos County Legislative Leaders Celebrate $100 Million Investment in Port of Coos Bay
COOS BAY, Ore. – Legislators representing Coos County are hailing a historic $100 million investment in the Port of Coos Bay, a move that will boost economic development and create good-paying jobs in Southwest Oregon.
The funding will support dredging the port to accommodate larger vessels and strengthen its position as a critical shipping hub. The investment also includes improvements to the rail line from Coos Bay to Eugene, ensuring goods can move efficiently to markets across the American Heartland.
Senator Dick Anderson (R-Lincoln City), Senator David Brock Smith (R-Port Orford), Representative Boomer Wright (R-Florence), and Representative Court Boice (R-Gold Beach) issued the following statement:
“The Coos Bay region is a special place to live, work, and raise a family. This $100 million investment will help deepen the port, improve transportation infrastructure, and create lasting economic opportunities for our communities. We are grateful to the Governor for signing this bill and shining a spotlight on the potential of this incredible region.”
Before the project can begin, the Port of Coos Bay and its private partner, North Point, must complete an environmental impact study. The funds also depend on federal support, primarily for upgrades to rail crossings and yards along the Coos Bay-to-Eugene corridor.
“Being able to ship goods from Coos Bay by rail to Eugene and beyond is a game-changer for the region,” said the lawmakers. “Coos Bay is the third deepest port on the West Coast, and it’s time to leverage this advantage to create jobs and strengthen our local economy.”
